‘Green barriers’ for air pollutant capture: Leaf micromorphology as a mechanism to explain plants capacity to capture particulate matter

چکیده

Finding ways to mitigate atmospheric particulate matter (PM) is one of the key steps towards fighting air pollution and protecting people's health. The use green infrastructure option that could help improving urban quality promoting more sustainable cities. Detailed knowledge how plants capture can support plant selection for this purpose. Previous studies have primarily focused on 2D techniques assess micromorphology leaves. Here, 3D optical profilometry SEM imaging (2D) are used quantify leaf roughness other micromorphological traits three contrasting species (Hedera helix ‘Woerner’, Thuja occidentalis ‘Smaragd’, Phyllostachys nigra) located within a mixed-species barrier. These allowed us identify relative distribution adhered PM with respect surface topography leaves, high spatial resolution. Leaf did not show direct relationship deposition; however, descriptors width, depth frequency grooves important explain by Additionally, presence wax leaves was relevant adherence. All captured PM, their overall efficiency ranked from highest lowest as follows: > Hedera nigra. barrier contributed improvement, through capture, regardless location Having multiple in beneficial due diverse range micromorphologies present, thus offering different mechanisms capture.

Low cost air quality monitors to evaluate nanosized particulate matter. A pilot study

Particulate matter is defined as a mixture of airborne solid particles and liquid droplets that can be inhaled and may cause serious health problems. Such elements are currently measured utilizing air quality monitoring devices that provide information on PM 10 and PM 2.5 levels giving information on pollution levels. However, many difficulties are encountered in the determination of nanosized ...

Assessment of Dust Holding Capacity of Nanofiber Media and Its Ability to Capture Synthetic Dust

Background and Aim: Evaluation of the performance of these products is mainly based on their efficiency in numerical removal of particles in the range of different sizes. While the most important features of filters are the dust holding capacity, and the ability to remove the mass of particles with different densities, fewer studies have addressed this issue. Therefore, the present study evalua...

Feasibility of Air Capture

Capturing CO2 from air, referred to as air capture, is being proposed as a viable climate change mitigation technology. Technically, air capture is not a new technology; industrial applications can be traced back to the 1930s. This paper explores the feasibility of this technology as a climate change mitigation option. Two different pathways of air capture are assessed: direct air capture, whic...

Template Assisted Method for Enhancing the Zeolite’s Ability to Capture Methionine

To investigate template effect on physicochemical properties of zeolite and enhance the molecular sieving properties, adsorption of methionine amino acid was studied by spectroscopic methods. Four zeolites such as methionine templated analcime, methionine templated zeolite P, N, N-dibenzyl N,N,N,N-tetramethylethylenediamine (DBTMED) templated analcime and free template analcime were synthesized...
